Even though the celebrations are concentrated towards the end of summer, around the 15th of August in honour of the patron saint of Benalmádena, the Virgen de la Cruz, the place offers a varied leisure program all around. First, it includes the many exhibitions, which you can see in Benalmádena. One will take place in September 2017 in the “Centro de Exposiciones” in the Avenida Antonio Machado 33, an exhibition which is devoted to the international day of peace from the United Nations. Thirty international artists will exhibit here with paintings, photographs, sculptures, video shows and performances with the theme “La Belleza del Ser”, the beauty of the being (open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 1pm and from 6.30pm until 9pm, and public holidays from 11am until 1pm, admission free). The Bil-Bil Castle, directly on the beach promenade of Benalmádena, is worth a visit because of its Moorish architecture; here one can admire the paintings of contemporary Spanish artist Pablo Rodríguez Guy until the 25th of August 2017 (Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm and from 5pm to 10pm). From the 1st to 11th of September the club Lucky Quilters International will be exhibiting here theirs Art Quilts and patchwork works.

For the summer evenings, the municipality of Benalmádena holds a very special program for their guests. Under the motto “Cultura en la calle” (“culture on the street”), there will be free concerts at 10.30pm. These include a jazz concert (19th of August) and a string quartet concert (22nd of August) on the Plaza de la Tribuna, and a flamenco concert in the Parque de Carola in the village of Arroyo de la Miel on the 26th of August. Flamenco lovers are recommended a trip to the nearby mountain village of Mijas, located only 18 kilometres from Benalmádena. During the summer months of July and August, young guitar and flamenco artists enter the program “Damos el Cante” every Friday night in the courtyard of the historical Ethnological Museum on the Plaza de la Libertad.

Even the youngest can look forward to a special musical event: on the 20th of August 20, they will be able to listen to some well-known songs in the Auditorio municipal, close to the Parque de la Paloma) in the concert “El Tributo de El Rey León”), in which the “Lion King” will be giving his best performance (tickets between 11,50 and 19,80 euros).

In addition to art and culture, the municipality of Benalmádena also highlights the important sports events. So, this year the XXIV deep sea fishing international competition will take place on the last weekend of August (26th and 27th of August at the Marina, from 8.30am to 7pm). Two weeks later, the kick-off for the 24-hour sailing regatta of Benalmádena, this can be observed from the beach “Playa de Malapesquera” on the 9th of September.
